Weddings & Funerals in Victoria / Stage 4 lockdown & how it might affect your marriage in Melbourne

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

For the first time in Australian history, weddings have been cancelled during the intense Stage Four lockdown measures crafted by the State Government, to address coronavirus - Covid-19.

However, many couples in Melbourne and Victoria, are still planning weddings for future dates. As a full time celebrant, I'm here to help and am always available to answer questions, so feel free to contact me here with anything at all.

The Latest News on Weddings & Funerals

On Sunday 6th September 2020, Premier Dan Andrews announced his government's 'Reopening Roadmap' - a plan for the rest of the year.

Regarding weddings & funerals, here is the lowdown, (noting ALL of these outcomes are dependent on case outcomes!) :

UNTIL 26TH OCTOBER 2020

Weddings are not permitted (unless for compassionate reasons.)

Funerals are allowed with up to 10 people (infants under 12 months of age or people required to conduct the funeral not included in the limit)

AFTER 26 OCTOBER 2020

Weddings are allowed with up to 10 people including you, your celebrant and two witnesses.

Funerals are allowed with up to 20 people (infants under 12 months of age or people required to conduct the funeral not included in the limit)

FROM 23 NOVEMBER 2020

Weddings If we sustain zero cases for two weeks prior, weddings are allowed with up to 50 at a registered venue but only 20 at a private property.

  • AND - If we maintain zero cases for another two weeks beyond that, guest numbers will be unlimited as long as the venue records guest details.

Funerals - If we sustain zero cases for two weeks prior, funerals are allowed with up to 50 people, or 20 at a private residence, (infants under 12 months of age or people required to conduct the funeral not included in the limit)

  • AND - if we maintain zero cases for another two weeks beyond that, funerals numbers will be unlimited, as long as organisers keep records of attendees.

'Legals Only' Weddings & Elopements

For some couples the option is to get legally married now, then celebrate with family and friends at a later date. This is all about completing paperwork and getting your marriage certificate quickly and professionally.

Interestingly, many others are just enjoying smaller wedding or elopements. I can tell you from the heart that some of that some of the tiny weddings I've conducted in 2020 have been incredibly meaningful and romantic. It really works- in fact I wrote more about this here! You can still say personal wedding vows to each other and exchange rings - it's all up to you!

I will still create the warm, fun loving atmosphere which I offer to all my coupes. Check out what my couples say about me on Google.

Health, Hygiene & Covid-Safety

These are the buzz words of the year! Of course, I will only marry couples within the rules. There are no exceptions whatsoever.

What does this mean?

  • Masks!

  • I will ensure I am up to date with the numbers allowed at your wedding

  • We will stand minimum 1.5 metres apart (except for the couple if they have been living together (self-isolating) previously

  • I will bring the certificate and paperwork for you to sign which will do as safely as possible

Please contact me here if you need to get in touch. Much love - keep safe, Kate x
