How to get married in Victoria / The 5-person rule / How this Melbourne celebrant will marry you!

The global pandemic has changed everything – even how couples can get married in Australia. All large-scale weddings have been cancelled and many wedding vendors are choosing not to work, understandably, for health reasons.

Even Births Deaths & Marriages Victoria is now closed for weddings until further notice, due to a State of Emergency posed by coronavirus (COVID-19).

However, many couples in Melbourne and Victoria, still wish to be married for all kinds of reasons. And I am here to help. I will marry you within the current rules.

How Kate Morgan, Melbourne Celebrant will marry you during the coronavirus pandemic

The 5-person rule (as of Wednesday 25th March 2020)

Victorian celebrants have been advised of the following:

“the solemnisation of a marriage is to occur with a maximum attendance of no more than five people, being the two parties, the authorised marriage celebrant, and the two witnesses. Social distancing of 1 person per 4 square metres is to be enforced. This applies to marriages both indoors and outdoors.”

Legals Only Weddings / Elopements

For the purposes of getting you married, during this ‘State of Emergency’ I will perform only the legal requirements to get you married in a safe and hygienic manner.

That means I will say the Monitum and you will be required to say the legal vows.

On the day, you will receive your hand-signed wedding certificate and I will lodge the marriage online at Births Deaths & Marriages.

Will it be romantic?

Yes, if you wish it to be, your wedding can still be romantic and meaningful.

You can say personal wedding vows to each other (following the legal vows) and exchange rings. One of your witnesses could recite poetry or make a short speech. You can bring your own music player and get dressed up!

These things are up to you. I will still create the warm and loving atmosphere which I offer to all my coupes. Check out what my couples say about me on Google.

I also understand, however, that some couples only require the marriage certificate and wish to get the ceremony done quickly and professionally.

Health & Hygiene

The 5-person rule will be followed in 100% of cases. There are no exceptions whatsoever.

What does this mean?

  • There will only be 5 people, (including the couple & me) at the wedding

  • All 5 of us will stand minimum 1.5 metres apart (except for the couple if they have been living together (self-isolating) previously

  • There are to be no guests standing at a distance or looking in from windows

  • I will not shake hands or touch anyone

  • You will be required to bring your own pen (and any other items you require) so that we do not share contact with any items

  • I will bring the certificate and paperwork for you to sign which will do as safely as possible

How much will it cost? $450 includes GST

  • At my home in Ormond, Victoria, I will witness your Notice of Intended Marriage, if required. (For legal purposes this must be signed one month before the wedding.
